This patent from the University of Colorodo teaches a nanofiltration membrane formed from a liquid crystal material capable of self-assembly. Claim 1 reads:

1. A composite membrane comprising:

a porous support; and

a lyotropic liquid crystal (LLC) polymer porous membrane attached to the support,

the LLC membrane having a thickness less than about 1 micron and a pore structure having hexagonally ordered, cylindrical nanopores.
